Go into the quiet Barker Road, off Dunearn and up along the slopey road at No. 19, and you’ll see a majestic castle-like four-storey mansion. On the outside wall, you’ll see a round black plaque showing the head of a bull-dog.
And if you take a peek and look up the stairs towards the main door, you’ll see a small statue of a bull-dog.
The story behind the dog head?
The owner of the house was Mr Ang Hai Sun who was a businessman. His soap factory, called See Sen Soap Factory, was very successful pre-war and also after the war. One of the company’s product, Dog’s Head Brand soap became very popular in Malaya and the region. Perhaps that’s why his house was decorated with all these trademark bulldogs.
His descendants still live in the house now.
